Poems by Janet A. Best
CITIES
New York, San Francisco, Paris, Madrid, etc.
Cities - they all have pulses
Their own characters and feelings.
We've been there and felt them
We've come alive there The lights, the buildings, the colors
The faces of people
The pulse is beating
Life is happening there
We need it and it engulf us
For all the cities we've been to
And loved
We send you this.
So you'll always remember Like the candle we lit so long ago
In Granada for all of us.
I like to think it's still burning.
WHAT IS LOVE
Love makes your face light up
Love is warm and tender
Love thinks you are beautiful when you know you're not
Love stands by and watches over you.
It's like a cold drink of water when you are lost in the desert
It makes life a little less empty
Love gives you room to breath
It holds you tight when you are lonely
It lets you go when it's time to go.
Love is read and purple
Love has color
It is not drab.
Ther is mother love, father love, husband love, child love,
sister love, brother love, friend love
But it's all love, just the same.
It has arms to hold you, legs to carry you when your are
tired, breath to warm you and a heart to center you.
Love sometimes waits for your or
Nudges you gently forward
It never crushes you when you are down
But rather lifts your spirit.
Love is funny
Sometimes sad
At times destructive
Sometimes it's a bandage on your wounds
Sometimes it's the glue to hold you together.
Sometimes it's bumpy while other times, it's smooth
Sometimes it's right on top so you can see it
But other times you have to chip the surface to find it
But you always find it there.
Ready to bubble up and spill over you when you most need it.
Without love, you may shrivel
Without love, you die.
With love, you are forever.
Love is quiet.
LOOKING THROUGH MY FATHER'S EYES
When I was a little child, I had a big bag of marbles.
They were beautiful ones too
And when I played, if I got tired or I didn't like the way the
Game was going,
I'd pick up my marbles and go home.
Through the years I kept my marbles
Of course, along the way I lost a few here and there.
But it was all right because I managed to hang onto most of them.
I felt safe because they were mine and therefore familiar.
Then I got old and had to retire; I didn't want to
But parts of me were not working as well as they did before.
And my memory was not as good as it once was.
My child took care of me but I didn't like it
Because I was used to being independent and felt like a burden.
What I'd really like to do is pick up my marbles and go home But I don't remember where home is
And I can't find my marbles.
NOISE POLLUTION
Oh, Cold Spring you used to be so quiet
Now that warm weather is there, every evening there seems to be a riot.
Between lawn mowers, weed whackers and machines galore
Everyone turns on, peace is no more.
And if life is not filled enough with tensions.
On weekends, hey get up early and start their engines.
If I had one wish, it would be this That we could all just be happy little fools
If everyone would throw away their power tools.
At least, Sunday could be a day of rest -
So says me ---A SHATTERED DREAM
I held in my hand a beautiful glass ball
It was all shiny and glittered like a diamond
It was so magnificent that I tried with all my might to hold onto it I must have held too tightly because I dropped it in spite of myself.
It slipped off my fingers and shattered into a thousand pieces on the floor.
I cried.
MOONLIGHT
Moonlight - peeking through the trees
Sparkling, dancing in and about the leaves
Glow light, moonlight making smiles upon our faces
Shining bright, gleaming light. Moonlight.
When darkness enfolds me, don't let me forget.
I want to remember the stars shining and twinkling in the night sky.
I want to remember the night on the River Seine in Paris.
Yes, there was moonlight then and beautiful stars during the Dinner Cruise.
There was music and wonderful food and an upper deck to
stand upon while gazing upon Notre Dame Cathedral.
My senses were alive with wonderment and as the music
played you could see the couples kissing on the avenue.
And as the sun went down, you could see the original Statue
of Liberty and you felt Paris; then the moonlight came.
I loved being alive that night.
Oh, please, don't let me ever forget that beautiful night and the
MOONLIGHT.
I THOUGHT
I Thought: I had escaped
I had survived
I would always be strong.
I Thought: that I was special
that most of life's slings and arrows would miss me.
that honesty would win out
that I would be safe
that skies would be blue and
clouds would pass over quickly.
that I could always depend on me.
When one was gone and the pain was felt
It seemed as if the world had ceased to be.
In time the wounds healed
The sun shone again
I had crawled out of the mud
It was over.
Bu then, another one appeared
Would it ever be over?
I thought Love would move mountains...
Maybe.
NO HERO
I am no hero and don't make me one
I wouldn't do this if I didn't have to
There is nothing noble about this fight
It claimed me and I had no choice.
Survival is all
Sometimes I don't know why
But I do it anyway.
So if it's a hero you need -
Look elsewhere.
