Background
Born at Leicester, England, in 1954, as he child he heard Welsh being spoken when on holidays in Wales and then went on to learn the language with the aid of books and radio courses. In 1975 he graduated at the university at Aberystwyth, with a B.A. in Welsh Literature. In 1979 he completed his M.A. on the work E. Prosser Rhys, a Welsh poet, editor and publisher, and in 1982 obtained a PhD for a thesis on the history of Breton scholarship. In 1978 he was appointed to the staff of the Welsh Department at Aberystwyth, where he now lectures on the history of Welsh and is responsible for a Modern Breton course through the medium of Welsh. He teaches a Breton-medium Welsh correspondence course for the Skol Ober organisation in Brittany, and is an Advisory Examiner for Cymdeithas y Cyfieithwyr (The Association of Welsh Translators). In 2007 he was awarded Urzh an Erminig (The Order of the Ermine) by Skol-Uhel ar Vro / Institut Culturel de Bretagne. He also has an interest in the Basque language and its literature. He contributes to the Breton magazine
Al Lanv (Kemper) and edits the bilingual, Welsh and Breton, magazine Breizh / Llydaw for Cymdeithas Cymru-Llydaw (The Brittany-Wales Society).
